Etoile by Kleenex/LiLiPUT

Despite being in French, there's something compelling about Etoile. It builds gracefully. The singer sounds like she's trying to fake an interest in something she doesn't quite care about. Combined with the guitar spikes and the accordion, the results are otherworldly.

There's something cute about the energetic pop of Snow Globe. It captures the thrill of infatuation.

Ford Vs. Chevy by Optimus Rhyme

Don't let the name throw you. Ford Vs. Chevy is at most only tangentially related to cars. What it is about is the Autobeat allies' battle against the Wackacons.

So Far Lihiot (To Be) by Habanot Nechama

Bilingualism is sexy, and the Israeli trio Habanot Nechama show it off. So Far Lihiot (To Be) also shows off a beautiful acoustic arrangement and bursts of fast singing.

The Blitz by The John Benjamin Band

Dancing and defiance are two things that belong together. The John Benjamin Band and his backing chorus will dance defiantly through the storm. They did survive The Blitz.

Bog People by Xiu Xiu

I've given La Forêt a few good listens and most of it hasn't grabbed me. But Bog People is a seriously good Xiu Xiu song. It's got all the Xiu Xiu hallmarks: an unusual arrangement, disturbing lyric, and melodramatic singing. But it also manages to be approachable and not too abrasive for all that.

Comin' Up From Behind by Two Ton Boa

I like an underdog. Like some of their other songs, Two Ton Boa's Comin' Up From Behind at first made me sure I wouldn't like it. But it won me over and left me wanting to hear more.

Policy On Rape by Southwest Statistic and Puce

Even though they fudged the rules a bit, Policy on Rape still managed to win the Policy of Rape Songfight. It's not hard to hear why. Southwest Statistic brings the rock for this one, with Puce's lyrics and singing fitting perfectly.

24 by Meme Vs. Xan

It's not hard to find a few great songs by David Meme if you know where to look. Many of those songs pair him with Xan's beautiful singing. 24 is a perfect demonstration of how compelling this combination can be.

Which MC Was That? by MC Frontalot

If a song you just heard on the internet leaves you wondering Which MC Was That, ask yourself this. Did he sound white and nerdy? Was it well produced with goofy flow that's nonetheless on time? Then it was probably front-a-something.

Icicles And Snowflakes by Inch-Time

Burn Don't Freeze by Sleater-Kinney

I certainly don't have anything against catchy, well made alternative rock songs. The chorus of Burn Don't Freeze is insidiously catchy, and I'm always a sucker for two different voices singing two different things at once.

When It Stops by Evils That Never Came

Ok, so Evils That Never Came is at least a bit reminiscent of Spoon. That's ok. I like Spoon. And When It Stops sounds like classic, Girls Can Tell Spoon.

High Enough by Lonbobby

Song Fighters generally don't like instrumentals, and Lonbobby's High Enough is an example of why. It's not easy to see a connection between the song and the title of the competition. But this has nothing to do with the quality of the track. This peaceful, dreamy track is well worth the listen.

I Saw The Bright Shinies by The Octopus Project

This year The Octopus Project played too early in the day for me to catch them at Lollapalooza. It's a real shame too, as songs like I Saw the Bright Shinies attest. Listen and maybe you'll see the bright shinies too.

A Brand New Song by Brother Machine

There's a delightlful irony behind A Brand New Song. It was originally recorded for Going Nuts, Brother Machine's first demo. Years later, rather than moving on and writing another new song, he came back to this one and produced the recording currently available.
