Less of You by State Shirt

My favorite State Shirt song is Less Of You. It's a very amusing rant against George W. Bush, featuring horns, voice effects, and semi-incompetent white-boy rapping.

Oversleeping by 15-16 Puzzle

15-16 Puzzle is one of Songfight's best lyricists, and Oversleeping, his only winning entry, is a perfect example of clever wordplay.

Brown Boxes by The 'Over

The 'Over has quite a few songs available, but none have affected my like Brown Boxes. It's a slow piano song with a mournful female voice.

Misery Is A Butterfly by Blonde Redhead

The title song of Blonde Redhead's second most recent album, Misery Is A Butterfly, is a perfect example of what you get listening to that album: ethereal Japanese female vocals over simple but beautiful orchestration.

Thick Atmosphere by Ghetto Pony

Ghetto Pony recently put up a new song. And like most of their stuff, Thick Atmosphere is a odd, rhythmic rock song that finds its groove and just hovers around it.

Through A Keyhole by Walter Meego

Walter Meego makes the most perfect sort of quirky electronic dance music. Through A Keyhole is instantly catchy without sounding commonplace.

Fashion Zombies by The Aquabats

The Aquabats are here to battle the ranks of the undead. Or, failing that, deliver a song about fashion whores.

Tomorrow's Almost Over by Lemon Party

Though they only have six songs there, Lemon Party have contributed some of the most interesting songs in the Song Fight! archive. Tomorrow's Almost Over won that fight, and rightfully so.

la lune by Mari Fukuhara

Mari Fukuhara most recently has doing solo piano performances. la lune combines her piano playing with some strings (a cello?) and what sounds like programmed drumbeat to create a moody instrumental piece.

Things I Don't Remember by Ugly Casanova

Ugly Casanova is a collaboration between some guy from Modest Mouse, some guy from Califone, and some other guys. Their album Sharpen Your Teeth is one of my favorite albums. Things I Don't Remember is a surreal sort of song with lyrics that seem to follow a dream logic.

Nur Ein Champion, Final Round: Heart Of A Lion

Challenge: Bring your "A"-game

In the final round Puce beat Frankie Big Face by a single vote. Puce's entry is his first stab at live keys (he normally sequences). The song can either be about cats or girlfriends, it's your choice.

Nur Ein Champion, Round Six: Last Hope

Challenge: Six+ minutes in length

In response to this challenge for an epic song, Puce takes on an epic topic: the monomyth, the basic story structure common the stories of Jesus and Moses, to Star Wars and The Matrix, and present in the mythology of just about every culture ever. But don't worry; just because you already know how this story goes doesn't it's not worth hearing. The growling alone makes it worth the listen.

Nur Ein Champion, Round Five: The Thing Most Easily Forgotten

Challenge: Vox and guitar (bass is not okay)

This round nearly saw Puce eliminated. He was up against some excellent offerings from his rivals and he turned out his weakest entry in the competition. The silly lyrics about a broken relationship earned the approval of one of the judges, which was just enough to pass him into the next round.

Nur Ein Champion, Round Four: No One Else

Challenge: No guitar (bass is okay)

With immunity in this round, Puce delivers an angry electronic rock tune about a dysfunctional relationship.

Nur Ein Champion, Round Three: State of Emergency

Challenge: Guest Vocals

For this round Puce teamed up with fellow internet one-man rock act Brad Sucks to deliver some frenzied paranoid ramblings that won the judges approval and immunity in round four.

Nur Ein Champion, Round Two: Brownie Points

Challenge: Must include a change in time signature

Immune from elimination from his first round win, Puce took the opportunity to make a song incorporating as many things that other Song Fight! reviewers hate. These include:
  1. A pointless sample opener (the A-Ha sample is a reference to a Song Fight! entry that the fightmasters deleted because it was just a long loop of an A-Ha sample).
  2. Lyrics about song writing.
  3. Playing out of tune.
  4. Pointless profanity.
  5. Humming along to the tune rather than singing.
But since he was immune, the song was just for Brownie Points.

Nur Ein Champion, Round One: Sister Cocaine

Challenge: The song must include use of alliteration.

Puce got off to a good start with an upbeat tune featuring absurd religious/drug addiction puns. It got him a first round win, granting him immunity from elimination in the second round.

Heart Of A Lion by Frankie Big Face

Frankie Big Face writes love songs. This limits his appeal for me, but some of them are so good I can't help but fall in love with them anyway. In this year's Nur Ein competition he's been trading off wins with Puce for most of the competition, and the two of them are now battling for the votes of the elimnated contestants with their final songs, Heart Of A Lion. After hearing Puce's entry, I was sure Frankie's song would have to be my favorite song of his for him to compete, and he damn near delivered that.

Get A Life by Doctor Worm

The latest Song Fight! entry by Doctor Worm is a just a straight up rocking song. Get A Life is hardly expertly recorded or mixed, but that gives it a bit of a garage music appeal.
