I suspect that most people have met someone like Stacey. She inspired Hostess Mostess to warn "Don't think that a fall is over just 'cause you've hit the ground." But despite being suddenly down, he still thanks Stacey, and the sentiment comes off as genuine and bittersweet rather than ironic and just bitter.
