Brittney Spears has some goddamn catchy tunes with her name on them. Local H took Toxic and made a grungy alternative rock song out of it.

Violet Wants It Her Way by Frankie Big Face
This is my favorite Frankie Big Face song. It's a cover of a pretty good Jon Eric song, but Frankie Big Face recasts it as a gorgeously slow, melodramatic piece. His singing at the end is simply fantastic.

Killing An Arab by The Cow Exchange
I start this off with two different covers of Killing an Arab by The Cure from The Cow Exchange. Both were done for the Gift of Music. One is a catchy electronic pop version with a bass synth line that catches my ear. The other is a piano interpretation of the song with a quiet intensity.

Interstate 8 by Modest Mouse
The tone of the guitar gives Interstate 8 away as a Modest Mouse song right away. And like a lot of their older stuff, it goes on about driving about. Nobody sounds quite like Modest Mouse.

Montana by Deceptikon featuring Cyne
The rapping in Montana is pretty strong, but the real attention getter here is the unconventional beats.

Get-Away Beat by Brother Machine
Get-Away Beat is one of the catchiest, poppiest tracks on Brother Machine's first album, Going Nuts. It's incredibly well produced for an early experiment from a bedroom musician.

A Spring Of Teal by State Shirt
A Spring Of Teal is one of my favorite State Shirt songs. It has a lot of effects dressing it up, but the real strength of the song is a the solid rhythm sections. The pounding drums and pulsing bass carry the song, especially during the excellent bridge after the second chorus.

What's The Big Idea by Ghetto Pony
It may be a little long winded, but What's the Big Idea is a little different from the other Ghetto Pony songs. It's got piano backbone without the effects all the effects they typically use. The singing seems closer to pop style too. It combines with the obviously programmed electronic drumbeat to create an interesting mix.

Invisible Walls by Revolution Void
Invisible Walls creeps along as a typical moody electronic tune. And then the sax joins the mix, and takes it in another direction, with a different feel. And the whole thing fits together perfectly.

Oversleeping by Melvin
Melvin has an extensive list of songs in the Song Fight archive. For me most of them don't stand out from each other, and Oversleeping is what I think of as a typical Melvin song. It's solid pop rock. But it also has the terrifically memorable lyric "I'm not oversleeping, I'm just keeping my dreams alive."
